The Mountain Sports Trail Running Team was back in action this past Saturday at the Crested Butte Ultra 55 kilometer race. The event, hosted by Crested Butte Mountain Resort, is a part of the Mad Moose Events race series. Athletes traversed roughly 35 miles through the West Elk mountain range with roughly 7,000 feet of elevation gain.
On the men’s side, Jeshurun Small led the way for the Mountaineers with a first place finish in a time of 4:56:07, breaking the course record by nearly 25 minutes. Riley Moser and Christian Kerr finished 2nd and 3rd respectively making the race a Mountain Sports podium sweep. Freshmen Peter Hajdo was 10th in the men’s race with his ultramarathon debut.
For the women’s squad, graduate student Kendall Cox finished in 7th place with a time of 7:34:12. New Mexico natives Ella Chavez and Lindsey Herman were 13th and 18th respectively. This was Herman’s first ultramarathon as well. Kelsey Swanson rounded out the finishers for the women with a top-25 finish.
Next up for the Trail Team is the Camp for Coffee Cart to Cart Trail Run this coming Saturday in Crested Butte.
