The Western State Colorado University Nordic Ski Team performed exceptionally well this past weekend at the latest USCSA regional races, hosted by Colorado Mesa University high atop the Grand Mesa. Led by junior transfer Nate Maddox, Western also placed high in the team standings. Maddox showed his versatility by winning both the 1km skate sprint event on Saturday and the 10km mass start classic race on Sunday. Not to be out done, Samantha ‘Bob’ Maddox (Nate’s sister) stomped out the victory on Saturday in the 1km skate sprint race, and followed that up with a strong 2nd place showing on Sunday in the 10km classic event. Other strong performers for the weekend included sophomore Gordon Gianniny with a fantastic 5th place effort in the 10km classic, and sophomore Derek Hill placing a strong 7th in the 1km skate sprint. Freshman Eleanor Skinner posted a great 13th place in the skate sprint race and showed her strength by persevering in the 10km classic on Sunday. Freshman Justin Sanchez also placed an impressive 13th in the skate sprint event and showed great strength in the 10km classic.
Up next for Western? The Mountaineers will host the Rocky Mountain Conference this upcoming weekend at the Crested Butte Nordic Alley Loop Ski Marathon. Look for more strong results from this incredible group of student-athletes. #GoWestern
