The Western State Colorado University Nordic Team is a competitive program offering a full dry-land training season, year-round training plans, and high level racing.

Western competes in the United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association (USCSA) Rocky Mountain Conference. By combining a long history with new leadership, the team is a strong presence in the sport, both regionally and nationally. With structured, purposeful training and a detailed road-map for success, the team aims to be the best in the country by March of 2018.

The dry-land training season begins in the fall, with weekly roller-ski sessions, trail running, and strength training. The goal of this eight week block of training is to lay the foundation for a smooth transition to on-snow training (near Crested Butte!) in early November. Combined with detailed goal-setting and an eye on the future, this dry-land season sets the tone for a strong season of competition.

The team assembles for between six and eight training sessions per week, and is able to access a full 75km of groomed trails in the Gunnison Valley for winter training. The competition season begins in November with a training camp and races at the West Yellowstone Ski Festival in Montana, and lasts through mid-March with the conclusion of the USCSA National Championships. Throughout the season, the team races between ten and fifteen races in Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, and Utah; primarily competing against the University of Wyoming, Colorado Mesa University, The Air Force Academy, and Colorado College.

If you’re interested in attending Western to compete as a full member of the Nordic Team, please contact head coach Duncan Callahan for additional information. Please note – Now offering partial scholarships to those athletes uniquely qualified to help this team be the best in the country in the coming years. #GoWestern
