Late Friday night the Western Nordic Team headed out for their first full race of the year, to be held in the vicinity of Granby, CO. The Stagecoach classic is a 15K race supported and raced largely by community members. with over 300 participants, it was great to have Western represented.
Early Saturday morning, the team headed out to Devils Thumb Ranch for the start. After carefully selecting, applying, and testing a variety of waxes on their skis, the team set out to the start. The race coarse was a point to point race with the finish 15km later, in downtown Winter Park. The coarse offered several bridge crossings, many quick descents, and many brutal hills. Fortunately, it finished up on a long downhill portion. On the first day, Bob (Samantha) Maddox finished 3rd place in the womans division, Cameron Smith finishing 9th in the mens division, Kevin Geisen finished 12th, followed by Noah Kolis in 13th place and finally Patricia Wheeler Larson in 42nd place.
The second day’s team relay race was a bit more relaxed, but the team still gave it their all. Cameron, Kevin, and Noah made up the mens relay team and Bob, Patricia, and a University of Wyoming student made up the woman team. Everyone raced well.
