With US Collegiate National Championships in Sun Valley, ID quickly approaching in early March, the WSCU skier cross team has been putting some serious focus towards progression and results in recent weeks.
So far this season, both men and women ski cross teams have landed athletes on the podium of the USASA Rocky Mountain Series races. Francesca Pavillard-Cain has a second and third place, Xavier Martin a third place, and Morgan Haymans two first place finishes.
Everyone has already shown improvement in their skiing this year. The team is skiing 4 days a week, preparing for upcoming freeride, skier cross, and park & pipe compeitions – Morgan Haymans, athlete and student coach of skier cross
Despite the outstanding progress of student racers, the skier cross team has suffered two injuries this season. Amy Davis suffered a broken tailbone competing in the first Rocky Mountain Series race of the year and Kelly Kai Tokunaga had serious crash near the bottom of the course at Copper Mt. taking a warm up run before his first Nor-Am start on the Hole Shot Tour in early February. Kelly’s crash resulted in an unfortunate ambulance ride to Frisco followed by an airlift to Denver. Kelly sustained injuries to his hip, back, and leg. Our thoughts go out to Kelly and his family as he begins his recovery.
Stay tuned for more updates as the team continues training for their next competition at US Collegiate National Championships.
