With much anticipation, students and campus have been awaiting the annual Campus Jam event here at WSCU which takes place tomorrow, February 15th here at WSCU. The Jam is in it’s 4th year and is a unique event held on campus for both spectators and athletes. In past years the jam as brought crowds of over 500 to the banks of the WSCU Rail Park to watch 30-40 skiers and snowboarders compete for cash and shwag prizes. The Campus Jam and Rail Park have been 100% student planned, organized, and run since the inaugural year in 2009, from class project turned reality – a great example of what opportunities are available at Western State Colorado University.
Student organizers hope this year’s event will top previous years both in participation and attendance. The event has partnered with several on and off campus organizations and businesses to help bolster the reputation of the experience. Businesses such as Colorado FreeSkier, Crested Butte Mountain Resort, The Brick Cellar Bar, & Planks Clothing and campus organizations such as Student Government Association, Program Council, and WSCU Facilities are among the support for the event. Product giveaways will be going on throughout the jam – so stay tuned to our social outlets for exclusive updates.
The Campus Jam kicks off tomorrow at 6pm with practice for competitors and hopes to start finals around 8:15pm. For those wishing to compete, registration will be open at 3pm. DJ DC from Breckenridge, CO, a professional emcee and Winter X Games announcer, will be hosting the Jam and the after-party as well, at the Brick Cellar Bar in Gunnison. 1st place prize this year is quiet hefty: a backcountry access day with Red Bull in Crested Butte, CO this Saturday following the Jam. Additional prizes will include cash and product. Categories of competition include men’s ski and board, and women’s combined.
All event artwork and photos of past and present years are also student made. Credit goes out to Joel Matuszczak, Spenser Li, and Spencer Plum for the media here in this post.
